District implements coordinated west nile virus plan
The District's mandate is to manage urban drainage and water resources, and as part of that responsibility, we ensure the urban drainage system is not a significant source for mosquito breeding. For the past three years the Fresno Metropolitan Flood Control District has responded proactively to community concerns regarding the spread of West Nile Virus in the Central Valley. The District's role in the Fresno County West Nile Virus prevention plan includes:
- Teamwork with other agencies
- Stocking ponding basins with "mosquito fish"
- Vegetation control in basins to give "mosquito fish" access to all areas of the water
- Basin designs which reduce the amount of shallow water available for mosquito breeding
- Chemical treatment of storm drain inlets and related facilities every 3-4 months during mosquito breeding season
- Public education and outreach on West Nile Virus transmission and prevention
