Pollutant RemovalA key design feature that makes the District’s flood control and urban drainage system effective and unique is the natural removal of pollutants.
Stormwater and urban runoff is moved through gutters, into storm drain inlets, and then deposited into approximately 140 stormwater detention basins in the Fresno/Clovis area. This water soaks into the ground and eventually to the underground aquifer, which is where our community draws its potable water. As the water soaks through the soil, the soil acts as a natural filter for many water-borne pollutants such as:
- Motor Oil
- Household Chemicals
- Sediments
- Trash and other debris
